In my 50, years ago, (recently in my 54) I’ve had the best success using 1/16” LDPE wads.
I made the cutters to punch groove diameter wads…
I’d recommend to try felt as well..
Good luck testing.

Oh and an 11/16" punch ($10 off Amazon) is perfect for .54 wads... felt source is durofelt - look for the "for wads" stuff in 1/8" but consider experimenting with 1/16" as well as the medium vs. hard felt Duro-Felt Products

Been using a 12 mm punch off Amazon for .45. Seems to work fine but starting to dull after about 500 felt wads. I think I might buy a higher quality one next time.

I actually bought my wads from Dixie gun works, and Track of the Wolf They come hundred to a bag and not that expensive, either dry or lubricated. Seems like to me I could get either felt or wool.
Squint
