I own 14 muzzleloaders...yes I have it bad but you can't have to many guns. I usually use bore butter inside and out to protect them when they are put up. I noticed yesterday that over periods of time it's turning to a white flaky dust like it's drying out. What all do you use to protect your muzzleloaders when they are put up for a period of time?

Lol, only 14, I must be really sick, afraid to say how many I have!! I typically use a synthetic oil in the bore and the WD 40 Corrosion Specialist for those that are long-term. Short-term ones just get coating of Rem Oil, so far I've had no issues.

I have a friend that only uses bore butter and he never has any rust issues. Like him I was a believer in BB. Now depending on which muzzy I'm cleaning but now I always finish off with a quality gun oil for both short or long term storage.
I just may look into that WD-40 Corrosion Inhibiter.

I need to look into the WD-40 corrosion stuff too. I do know that regular WD-40 will evaporate over time.

I'm not really getting any rust at all. My problem is the bore butter is turning to a white flaky crap like it's drying out. I use ballistol when I do my cleaning after I shoot.

That’s one of the biggest complaints about “natural” products like Borebutter and Frog Lube - that residue/gunk/build-up.

That’s where the “more modern” choices shine.

Maybe its not what its held up to be? I won't use.

I do use the WD-40 Specialist though and have never looked back. Short term, long term. Can't beat it. It's nothing like the original WD-40 so don't confuse the two. Specialist is just plain great and uber-long lasting but it doesn't go gummy or foul things up.

I just bought me a can of the WD-40 corrosion stuff. The can wasn't very big and it was 14 bucks. Kinda salty but I'll give it a try and see what happens

If you store those MLs in a relatively dry / low humdity compartment and always-always make sure no moisture is present in the bore when you apply that (my opinion) crummy Bore Butter, then you increase storage time significantly using it long-term.

But don't ever believe those barrels won't eventually show pockets of rust. A good gun oil outlasts bore butter and even Hickock45 would probably tell ya' that his Ballistol storage treatments of his bores will outlast that Buttery stuff.

If I were you, I would discontinue it's use and switch to a good gun oil. There are several really good oils out there. Google some of them. Just stay away from ones built with a plant base like Frog Lube, which reacts poorly where it's stored in inconsistent temps and varying humidity levels.

The Frog also hate the freezing weather conditions. It will harden actions and get gummy=gooey when brought into a warm home right afterwards.

Bore butter has a dubious reputation it seems.

I’ve never seen it explicitly hurt anything but it definitely causes some user friendliness problems.

There are better options.

Light coating of your favorite gun oil or Boeshield is what I use.

Been using just regular gun oil for 50 yrs. Never had a problem.. although now I use ballistol in the bore and put a little oil soaked patch in the end of the barrel..
Works great.

I also use ballistal to clean, if you dry your guns then wipe it down with straight ballistal it doesn’t dry and no rust, I live in southeastern NC, so I got some humidity in summer.

I used to use bore butter, then switched to Ballistol, now however, I have grown to like Birchwood Casey's Barricade for short term and long term storage

I switched to Bear Grease, just like the old-timers. You can buy it from October Country.

I've using a product called Fluid Film for years. It's lanolin based and stops rust on contact. A wet patch down the bore and it's good to go.
