Attached are pictures of a Neill Fields Tennessee Mountain Rifle that is for sale. The seller is asking $1,000 for it.

This is one of those rifles that Neill made on his own time with GRRW parts, including a GRRW barrel. Neill engrave the name of the original owner on the barrel along with his own name and some decoration.

The serial number and caliber stamps near the breech have been added since Neill built the rifle and do not relate to any of GRRW’s serial numbers. This is not a GRRW factory rifle but a custom rifle built by Neill while still working for GRRW.

The specifics of the rifle are:
  • Overall length 54 inches
  • Barrel length 38 inches
  • Barrel diameter 13/16 inch
  • Length of pull 13.5 inches
  • Caliber .50
  • Stock walnut
  • Steel mounts trigger guard, butt plate, toe plate, patch box, escutcheon, ramrod pipes
  • Lock Siler flintlock
  • Trigger guard hand forged
  • Butt plate cast plate GRRW used on half stock and full stock Hawken rifles
  • Banana patch box
While similar to the standard GRRW Poor Boy, this rifle is a true custom rifle with a different trigger guard, a steel butt plate, different lock bolt escutcheon, a banana patch box, and different butt stock profile.

As you can see in the photos, it is a very handsome and unique rifle.

I have two of Neils' rifles, they are well crafted and tack drivers !

Neil is probably one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, plus being an excellent muzzleloading gunsmith.

I, too, have a Neill Fields' rifle, and I consider it the finest rifle I own.

I have two of Niels' rifles, one a little leman rifle .36 he made for my late father, with Dads' name engraved on the top flat, and a lovely Lancaster style flintlock he made for me years ago, both rifles shoot beautifully and are ver well made.
