Cooperfan,
I had Melvin paint my NULA muzzleloader in the camo leaf pattern he shows
in his brochure. I also requested the same colors.
Since this camo paint scheme is not clear coated, the finnish is rough to
the touch and lends very good gripping texture.
Melvin uses automotive type paints for durability. My second choice was a
olive drab base coat with white/black spiderwebbing.
You will be quite pleased with the overall fit and finnish of his
muzzleloaders.
I had only two complaints with mine:
1) Since Melvin says to use CCI primers only, he cuts the boltface recess
to the exact primer cup flange dimensions(yes, there are slight diameter
differances form one manuf. to another). In light of this and a slight
dimension change the CCI primer factory made, when I recieved my NULA
the CCI primers would not fit. Melvin found out about the above and had me
send my bolt to him to re-cut the bolt face recess. No problems since then.
2) The ramdrod supplied is often referred to as a "noodle" due to it's
limpness. I had Mr. Gunn at Spinjag make me a custom black anodized
aluminum ramrod with a spinjag. This rod is very nice, stout and will not
harm the rifling.
Stick with Melvins recommended loads(you will have to ask him for them).
Once you have your NULA shooting well(very easy withn this gun), you can
experiment with other powder/bullet combinations.Watch the powder burn
time's and bullet weight to limit chamber pressures. Follow reloading
manual loads for 45-70 and similar cartridges or use loads recommended
loads here on this website.
I shoot 4759 powder(42gr-NULA and 43gr-Savage) and use the Parker BE
275gr bullet w/supplied MMP sabot. These loads shoot 3/4" to 1"
out to 150 yards in both rifles.
Good luck and great choice!
Jack
