Sol-lunar Tables Are Mostly Bunk

I depend on sol-lunar tables early in the hunting season because they have proven to me that they are fairly accurate. However, once the cold fronts start to hit, I more or less ignore them. Today was fairly mild with no fronts and no high-pressure systems. I looked at the tables on my GPS and it said the major feed was between 4:58 and 6:58 AM.
I went hog hunting and saw a squirrel at 7:00 but, except for jumping 2 wood ducks, saw nothing else until 9:30 when I saw 4 deer moving through the woods. According to the tables they should have been bedded down.
No hogs were encountered but they tend to be nocturnal in areas where they are hunted.

In the Winter most deer movement is just before and just after a front moves through. The day after a front comes through is high pressure with wind from the north or northwest and not a cloud in the sky. I have learned to stay in bed on those mornings.

Sometimes the game movement times are spot on, sometimes not.   When there is a big moon deer and hogs are mostly feeding at night.   Animals  are much more likely to be out in the daytime when the  moon is small.

Interesting topic ‘pat.   After putting solar/lunar tables to the test as planned hunts, I don’t pay much attention to them.  Their popularity is based on plenty of scientific data to support their predictions, but the tables can’t forecast the weather...and that’s what’s really important.   Like fishing I pay attention to weather patterns when planning my hunts.   I like to hunt deer before and after acute changes in a weather pattern such as rain, snow or temperature.  Beautiful sunny days are for outside barbecues and walks on the beach.

We get 5-9 days to hunt. I'm hunting all of them. If we got 30 days i'd still hunt all of them.

Game is always there no matter what the weather is. They don't disappear. You just need to find them. That's hunting. Not sitting in a tree waiting for them to stroll by.

While agree with much of what you guys are saying about "hunt anyway" and "hunt all you can", I have found that deer movement is greater when there is a "major" feeding time right after sunup.  It increases my odds of seeing game and it seems to work even in the middle of the day.

I remember one day specifcially years ago.  I was hunting out in west Texas, doing a lot of walking and glassing from ridges.  About 12:45 I was glassing from a ridge above a valley floor  and all of a sudden saw 3 differernt bucks and several groups of hogs moving.  I shot a nice buck.  Later I checked a "major feeding" time had started about noon.  I can not think of any other reason all the animals just all of a sudden decided to get up and move around for most of an hour.

I think there is SOME validity to solunar tables.  But it's not the end all.

In the end, my work schedule dictates a lot of when I can hunt.  But with some ability to vary my work schedule, I vary it to allow my hunting to target weather and solunar conditions, thus creating my best chance to see game.  In my area here near home, the trees are THICK.  If the game don't walk around and into an open spot, you are not going to see them.

Not true. It's called still hunting. Go in and find them. 90% of game i've shot have been in deep timber. The other 10% have been on the edge of it.

I can't remember ever shooting any game in the open.

What are you saying is "not true"?

I've shot many deer and hog in open fields as far as 200 yards from a tree line.  I think hunting in different terrain, regions, etc. yields different experiences.

It's really hard to compare hunting strategies when you are in different parts of the country. :|  While we would all like to pick and choose when to hunt, the majority of us hunt when we can fit it into our livelihood...present company included.

The part about the trees being too thick to see the game and you have to wait until they come in the open.

I've found that when someone says they can't hunt the dark timber they really mean they don't want to. There could be exceptions, but i've hunted some thick ugly timber that I had to crawl through. During hunting seasons when pressure is high elk hide in those areas. Most hunters won't find them, because they don't make the effort to look.

Muley bucks are the same way. A buck will stay still and let you walk right by them if you aren't really looking. Just walk through the woods and you'll miss them everytime.

I've taught quite a few friends to still hunt. All of them will make the comment when we get started..........."I never would have dreamed to hunt in there."

And poor little ole me was worried about a wounded animal stumbling into the marshes.
Where do swamps fall into all your over all hunting plans? :)

I have never used the sol-lunar tables for hunting. But, I will likely take a peak now.
The old Farmer's Almanac had some cool help back in the day. When I was gardening large
it was too on target to be complete coincidence.

I would just use that as a reference and do what felt best. It will be fun to look.

And, then, there is my chicken sacrifice to the hunting gods... that always helps, too. ;)
I use KFC.

All of our hunting styles, climate, and terrain is different, one size does not fit all. One of my favorite places for taking large muley bucks did not have a tree over 10' high in any direction for over 30 miles. Mostly rolling desert with dry washes and a few springs.
It was part of my great uncles ranch, we worked in mornings and evenings and still hunted the sage during the day when deer were bedded. No ATV or easy mans way of hunting back then.

Never said there was John. However, when someone says they can't hunt an area, because the trees are too thick. I have to comment. Most all of them can with some effort.

Well, I was attracted to those thick clumps of vegetation here...
I like to push into the brush if I think there might be critters hiding there.

Here? I ain't interested in drowning. And, I ain't fond of cottonmouths and alligators
or whatever else Jurassic era varmint that might want to bite me.

I walked into some tall grasses this weekend and was in 10 feet before I realized I was in water.
almost above my shoes. Here? In the swampy Australia of the US? Caution is advised.

I don't go anywhere without these on. One pair lasts me about 2 1/2 years.

They're thick enough and tall enough to divert a cottonmouth's fangs.

They're thick enough and tall enough to divert a cottonmouth's fangs.
Oh! Are they comfortable? And, who makes these?

i used that lunar table for our hog hunt. Falcon sent me the link and they were 100% as far as moon phase went. They showed just a sliver of a moon on the 11th and sure enough, that was true.

It has its uses but as usual, weather, water and simply, animals just being animals is the real game when it comes to hunting.
