From Hornady's current catalog, that offers an idea of the velocity range that Hornady feels is ideal for each specific XTP offering.

That's a good resource to have if you like to shoot XTP's.

Well... It may be a good GUIDELINE...but it's certainly not written in stone. Examples:

.400 200gr XTP 700-1200fps
.452 250gr XTP 800-1600fps
.452 300gr XTP 800-1700fps

That chart looks more like typical handgun VELOCITIES one is likely to encounter, NOT the velocity window for bullet performance on game. Either that or it's old data.

It's a good guideline since the XTP is a handgun bullet. While that's not saying what it will take (Grouse's 300 XTP on hog is a good example), it is probably what the company feels is it's best performance range.

It is the latest data. It is what Hornady feels is the optimal range, it sure doesn't mean that it stops working when given a few extra fps.

I'm surprised that the XTP .452 300 gr. has such a wide range-- 800-1700 fps is quite a spread!

It obviously does not specify type of game, or even type of shot placement. At least it is a relative guide-- if you seek a bullet most likely to expand at the lowest possible velocity, there it is. If you want a bullet that is relatively tough in comparison to others in the same XTP line-- there it is as well.

1960 fps was the speed my 300grn XTP was moving when i shot it. 44grns of 5744 out of the Savage.

If it is possible to under-rate a bullet as successful as the XTP, the .452 XTP is. It is amazing how versatile it is, how accurate it is, and how inexpensive it is.

The 300XTP is still my most accurate load in my Savage.
