Im wondering if there has been discussion about shooting smaller than caliber balls in a BP rifle. For instance, .490 balls in a .54 or .58, provided one uses the correct patch, is it safe to do so? Does accuracy just go all to heck so it's not worth wasting the lead? I'm fairly sure it is done in smoothbores but I have only rifles. Just curious. What is your experience and/ or opinion?

So from a 50 to 54 or a 54 to 58 you need like 3 .018 patches on the smaller than caliber ball?
