How do you remove the side lock on a 50 cal. New Englander? I see there is one screw ,is that all there is to remove? I realize you take the barrel off,and I did remove the one screw ,but the side lock was still very tight in the stock, and before I break anything,I'd thought I'd ask. Thank you

Yes, remove the barrel first then the single screw BUT keep the screw in slightly and then tap it. This will push the lock out of the stock a whole lot easier for you.

does the hammer have to be in half cock or full cock or do you remove the hammer first before removing the lock ? I want to be able to clean the lock assembly.

The lock on the New Englander I have was a little difficult to remove but after removing the barrel and wiggling and tapping , it came out OK. I don't remember if the hammer was at full cock or not but if you see or feel an interference when at half cock just cock it.
