Stats: 6 Deer Harvested(My Son and I together), all with 45cal Knight SS Disc Elites, and 200g Shockwaves, 90gV=65gW BH209, MV=1950 FPS, CCI Standard Primers, Lane's Modified Domed FPJ Breech Plugs

5 out of 6, DRT Largest Buck ran 60yards (He had already trotted 900yards-spooked by other hunters to get to me) out in a cut bean field, spraying blood everywhere, and fell so hard his rack plunged 8inches in the dirt

It all started back on 15Nov08, Opener of RIFLE season in Nebraska..I loaned out my 30.06 and took the Disc Elite out instead! This was the largest Buck, 5x5. Got him just at 102yards in cut bean field, high double lung--no shoulder contact..In and Out..Jellified the lungs..And he was still able to go 60 yards..though he looked like a drunken sailor on shore leave, weaving all over (No offense to our Navy folks intended  ) (He had already trotted 900yards-spooked by other hunters to get to me)

I then reloaded my 45cal Disc Elite, put it in my gun case and left it in the unheated garage until 01Dec08.

On the 01Dec08 I took it back out for Muzzleloader Opener, did'nt get a shot off all day or that evening.....
I put it back in the guncase, and left it in the unheated garage till 13Dec08

Between 01Dec and 13Dec My Son shot a small Fork horn-60yards and a yearling-100yards with His Disc Elite and same load. In and out of the forky, broadside-DRT, and Brisket shot the yearling at 100 yards with recovered bullet, went thru one lung and 4 ribs on one side, lodged just under skin of left ham-DRT. Bullet perfect mushroom, weighed 154grains.
Also shot a BIG doe broadside in-and-Out broadside, 70yards--DRT.

Haven't cleaned my gun or messed with the breech plug since sight in back in early November! It's back in the case, in the unheated garage tonight, temps are allready at -2/with -21 wind chill outside

I saw a HUGE bodied Buck, I will try to get on this comming weekend!! However, My Son saw him too...So i guess we'll see how this story ends :D  8) [/img][/b]

Great season for you both! That was neat that you recovered a 200 SW. I've shot a bunch of deer with them and never managed to not have it blow through, not that I'm complaining.

Now that is a great report! Loved the story and pics. Nice work.

Congratulations on ur successfull hunt ..now that is a story well documented ..very usefull for hunters ..glad for you ,that the SHOCKWAVES did their job ..my kills were complete pass throughs ,almost no internal damage ,no blood trail ,and the deer all ran too far before dropping dead...

Awesome! I like what I keep hearing about BH209. I can't wait to get to the range and do a little testing with it.

Congratulations on the good shooting ,the deer and a good season. Lee

Congratulations Lane, and thanks for the report w/pics. 8)

Great report and excellent pictures.. nice buck there. Way to go.

nice report. also i bought some of your powder tubes on ebay over the summer, they work great.

Lane's Modified Domed FPJ Breech Plugs

what is the modification to the breech plug?

I believe the flame channel diameter is opened up to .125" and the orifice diameter to .036". That is what I am doing to one of my breechplugs that the orifice has started to erode. The NFPJ performs great with very little blowback, it is just awkward to use in the field when it is cold. I want to use the "domed" breechplug and FPJ for hunting.

I modify the Knight Domed plug- also sold for the Revolution. I make it EXACTLY like the NFPJ plug, but open the small flash hole with a #60 bit, and this will ignite BH209 every time, with next to no blow back. This way I can still use the red jackets that eject well. :) 8)

This is a simple 2-step process:

1. From the nipple-towards the face, I use a 1/8 inch drill bit, and drill just to where the threads stop, About 30mm=1 1/8 inch. (Just like the NFPJ Plug)
2. Then from the face side, I use the #60 drill bit to open the flash hole . This is actually .04 inch diameter=the exact same diameter of the Knight Standard-Concave plug Flash hole.

The domed plug comes with a very tight fitting nipple-to-FPJ fit. This is like 2-3x tighter than the Standard concave plug. So with NEW red FPJ's, and the modified Domed plug, you get ALMOST the same blow-back free, INSTANT ignition as the NFPJ plug :D
And the BEST part is the red jackets always eject 8) so you don't have to sit there, RATTLING the bolt, trying to get the un-jacketed bare 209 primer to eject

I will measure some breechplug orifice diameters tomorrow at work. I believe the last time I checked the concave FPJ style was .035"-.036" and the domed FPJ was .029"-030". I will post my inspection results as my memory does not work as well as it once did.

Knight DISC Breechplug Orifice Diameters:
Concave FPJ - .035"-.036" measured 4 different breechplugs
"Domed" FPJ - .029"
"Domed" NFPJ - .031"
The flame channel diameter on the "domed" FPJ is much smaller in diameter and steps down to an even smaller diameter than the other two which are .125" all the way to the orifice.

Thanks J

The whole point being that the #60 bit fit by hand perfectly, in MY Standard Concave Breech Plug, so that is what I modified all (Three) of my Domed plugs with :)

So go ahead and get your set of Numbered drill bits, and hand size them to your old Standard concave plugs and go with that

Remember to use some oil with your drilling, to reduce heat, cause a #60-64 drill bit is really delicate

Lane, how do you gage how far to drill from nipple toward the face... you say until the threads stop, but how can you tell.
