Lyman has instructions on how to make the Barrel Tenon narrower to tighten the wedge. I own rifles where the wedge appeared to be heated and bent.

Which way is correct, especially with a cast Tenon?

Thanks!

Walt

Right. I've done it both ways, and can't really tell you why I did it one way or the other, just "felt" right etc.....

Another option is to wrap the bottom of the tenon with a narrow strip of aluminum foil tape like they use for sealing heating ducts. I have done that with good results. I have seen old rifles where the tenon was wrapped with thin wire to take up the bit of slack. You could probably wrap with thin copper wire or pound flat a thicker wire and do the same. It won’t take much to tighten it up.

My rifle is a Pennsylvania hunter flintlock, but I simply inserted part of a business card into place behind the lug inside the forearm, and laid the barrel back in and inserted the wedge key.
