Got the chrono out today. Very humid and muggy today due to the rain/hail storm we had yesterday evening. Everything got a good soaking.

Set the Chrono out 12 feet away and took 3 shots with 100gr ( 87gr weight) American Pioneer 2F - 245gr Powerbelt - Winchester W209 primers.

1607
1697
1644

I'll try some JSG 3F the next time i set the chrono up.

The Optima has a 26" barrel and had a total of 18 shots through it from yesterdays shooting. I will clean it and retest on a clean barrel and see what happens to the velocity.

Interesting velocities. I am curious, what does the makers of Powerbelts claim the velocity should be with that kind of load?

It was a long time a go but if I remember correctly it was 1200 to 1400 when I called them after I blew a coyote in half with one.
Also interesting is the 90 FPS difference from the high to the low in 3 shots.

it could also be caused by the barrel having 18 shots through it already. Im cleaning the rifle now and if the weather is ok tomorrow. i'll test 5 shots and see. Im just curious to how much that fouling in the bore affects the #'s.

Ahhhh i got an ideer! I have 2 of the 250gr thors left so i will try those out and see if the numbers jump or not. Be interesting to see how the thors hollow base does VS the Powerbelt seal.

Here is a fooling around target I shot awhile back... Several of the groups were shot with 100 grains T7-2f (77 grains by weight). You can compare the velocities for yourself

Sabotloader what kind of rifle were you shooting? Thats some great groups!

johnpb

It was a Knight DISC SS - 50 cal.

ya, i kinda felt good about the groups also but remember it was only 50 yards. I was more interested in getting the ballistics than the shooting...

due to the lay of the land out back, i'd have to put a target up on 10 foot stilts! I just aim at a rock out in the distance and make sure im about 4" above the chrono and let it go.

wow the Thors really make the numbers jump! Sadly though i only had One thor left  thought i had 2.

That 250gr Thor with 100gr APP 2f on a clean barrel left the bore at 2,150 FPS!

I decided to clean the rifle between shots and am going out now with the 245gr powerbelts and will swab between shots to keep things consistent.

Man that Thor was launching fast!

It appears you may have witnessed your clock getting 'fooled'. 1650 fps with a 245g bullet, and then 2150 fps with a 250g bullet doesn't really make much sense if the powder load was the same. Granted the bullets are of different type, but.................................

could be the better seal. The Thor has nothing on it that can fool the chrono.

245gr Powerbelt- 100gr APP Today on a swabbed bore.
1608
1644
1681

I am going to do 3 more shots but clean the bore and oil it like it normally is on the first shot.

ok i used the Barricade to oil the bore after i was finished cleaning it out. The freshly oiled bore really helped the numbers!

1870
1822 ( Maybe i didnt push until the powder compressed?)
1871

What a difference a clean bore makes. I need to get more Thor's because that 2,150 FPS has really perked my interest. It makes me wonder if that hollow base is really sealing it up that good to push the #'s that hight.

Good shootin load too. I was aiming at a rock out at 100 yards and that white spot just fell apart after a while
 Beautiful sharp crack sound as the rifle went off.

100gr pellets * Pyrodex i assume?* Powerbelt puts it at 1823 FPS. On a spotless barrel, im doing well above that with APP.

APP website shows a 100gr volume charge doing 1823 with a 240gr projectile * Most likely a sabot?*

I'll try difference primers as i test this. This is fun! I never had a chrono before so being able to play around and tune to get the max FPS by changing a little here and there, well thats just a bunch of fun to me.

FG Since you like velocities and things, here is the data for my TC Triumph. It's in nice table form on my computer but it came out a little confusing on the forum. The velocities are underlined and posted just left of the 100 Yards. Also when I post ffg or fffg it's short for Triple 7 powder. Most of my groups are with Barnes TMZ, spit-fires, MZ with a few PT Golds. All charges are weighed not volume measured.

When I get back from the range, I INSERT IGNORE the data into the table based on the group size. (smallest to largest) The group sizes are all measured c-t-c

Good stuff paintcan. Were those generally three-shot groups?

The data is quite readable even though the forum butchered your table. I've found the only way to retain the format when posting a table or chart is to do a screen capture of the table or save it as a JPEG file so you can post it as a picture.

Thank you paintcan

I will add it to my data base. I like several of the bullets you chronoed and tested. So it gives me a starting point and a reference for my own measurements to compare.

Yes those are 3 shot groups. When you see 0.39"/2 3" or something similar, it means two of the holes were 0.39" c-t-c then the third shot bumped it out to 3".

If I put two shots, close and boot the third...I like to know it instead of looking writing in a 3" group.

Sometimes the Chony might miss a reading and in that case I write 2054 (2) Which means I averaged two shots instead of three shots.

FG,

I think your one bullet sample was a fluke???
