Just wondering if anyone has tried any different powders in their Savage. Specifically Trail Boss. Seems ideal. Bulky, Low pressure, not temperature sensitive. What say you ?

Thanks, Tom

grumpy...
No trailboss. But have had good results with N120, H4198, RL7. I'm shooting 65gn RL7 this year with a 300gn Remington HP/ BCR sabot.

I have had my best luck with N120 at 60 grains or 4759 at 43 grains. I should have responded sooner. The book loads generally shoot well. I no longer use LilGun or 2400.

Never tride Lil'Gun or trail boss as these were not powders recommended to me by ANYONE. IIRC LilGun had some safety issues when used in the 10ML-II, but I might be wrong.

The two best performing powders I have tride with great success are:
RL-10X with 290 grain TMZs and 300grn Barnes "O's"
Shot both to MOA at 100yrds
And...
H-4198 with 300XTPs, 250XTPs, 245 Spitfires, 250 TMZs, 290 TMZs
This is the best OVER ALL performing powder in my 10ML-II. Shot all the above bullets at or below 1.75" MOA at 100yrds.
H-4198 was my best powder with the 245 Spitfires and XTPs shot both at or below 1.5" MOA at 100yrds. As a matter of fact H-4198 shot every bullet/sabot I tried below 2" at 100yrds.

I always recommend H-4198 as it is a great all around powder for use in the 10ML-II that USUALLY will work well with all bullet weights from 245-300 grains, will give you all the FPS you could ever want, and is most importantly, widely and easly available OTC, not the case with N110/120.

Shot N110/120 and SR4759 and N120 and SR4759 gave me 1.5" groups or better, but they could not give me the FPS I was looking for in bullets in the 290-300grn class, but shot more than accurately enough for hunting.

Hope this was helpfull.
Arthur

Tom,

Anymore I stick with 4759, N110 or 5744 pretty much in that order. N120 is great with heavier bullets but too specialized for my consumption.

Hi Tom,

This is some of my results with TrailBoss (TB):

(gW=grains Weighed on reloading scales)

(gV=grains Volume(to give you an idea of the bulkiness)

Tests were conducted With a 45cal SS Knight Disc Elite, 1:30 twist, 27inch barrel:

50gW(=150gV) TB, pushing 200g Hornady SST, muzzle velocity average; 1884 fps

50gW TB and 300g Platinum Powerbelt average muzzle: 1515 fps

40gW (=120gV) TB and 300g Platinum Powerbelt average muzzle: 1480 fps

33gW (=100gV) TB and 300g Platinum Powerbelt average muzzle: 1340 fps

I did find that very firmly compressing the load, turned out the tightest Prochrono results.

All primers appeared fine and no signs of any stress in the barrel or breech. Recoil was mild, compared to regular Goex Pinnacle powder.

This powder appears to be very safe and very clean burning. I shot a 1.5 inch group at 110yards, with the 50gW TB, and the 200g Hornady SST.

The conversion factor for Grains Weight (gW) to Grains By Volume(gV) is:
.33gW = 1gV so 33gW = 100gV

{{ Special NOTE: Transducer Pressure testing with a 50cal Muzzleloader, loaded with 33gW/100gV of TB, pushing a 300g SABOTED bullet, produced the same pressure spike/curve equal to using 3 Pyrodex pellets. }}

Yes I shoot alot of TrailBoss with 200g saboted bullets, now with my new smokeless 45cal NEF 45-70 conversion :)

I've been using TB for 4-5years, and also reload with it for: 30-06, 243, 204, 17REM, 22 Hornet, and 410-Slugs

I and MANY others feel TB is the most versitile(But By No Means The Fastest  ) powder ever invented  8)

.

Lane, was there any difference in velocity with TB vs the 3 pellet load?
Thanks.

Yes, the 3x50g pyro pellets, pushing the 300g saboted bullet, show about 1850fps.

The 33gW/100gV of TB only achieves about 1300fps, pushing the 300g saboted bullet, but the initial pressure spike Equals the 150gV of the 3 pellet pyrodex load.

TrailBoss is mostly used for reduced loads, and I get the most benifit from using it with 175-200g saboted bullets in the NEF 45-70 smokeless conversion.

Savage MLII, I am shooting 235grnQTSpitzer w/ magnum sub-base, 40grns of IMR4759. All info is at PRbullet.com. Shooting groups of 1" at 150yds.
