I'm planning a mule deer hunt in Nevada for September and it's looking like it will be cheaper, and faster, to fly into Utah and hitch a ride to camp with my outfitter versus the 2400 mile round trip drive. Question is, how do I travel with my BH 209? Should I send some ahead UPS or FedEx? Any thoughts?

pack it UPS. My guess is they would find it at the airport unless you put it in small vials all premeasured for hunting. You try carrying a full container and chances are you'll be spending time with the feds.

Don't EVER travel with a gun case you've even TRANSPORTED a fired muzzleloader in, thru the airport. I can GUARANTEE you that the dogs will hit on it!

The $40.00 won't break me, but I'm not sure if there's any BH 209 in Pioche, NV, not really a metro area! I'll probably ship some UPS, just have to check the regs, I'll also check with the airlines, but I'm guessing they won't allow it.

I've worked at an airport for 28 years,,all in firefighting. Have 2 friends that have "bomb dogs". Trust me on this one. 8)

If you fly into SLC than you have a Cabelas and 3 or 4 sportsmans warehouses to choose from not to mention any other sporting goods store in the area. Just a little FYI
After shipping and haz fee wouldnt't it be cheaper and less of a hassle just to buy a jug and than give it away after the hunt?

simple, or at least I figure so, get a number of 300 win mag cases, throw some 1/2 charges for however many loads you want to carry with you, (leave the spent primers in) seat a cheapo bullet, pull bullets with pliers when you get there, throw cases away. Oh I do think you have to have ammo and guns separate.

Firearms & Ammunition
Photo of a firearm improperly packaged. You may only transport firearms, ammunition and firearm parts in your checked baggage. Firearms, ammunition and firearm parts are prohibited from carry-on baggage.
There are certain limited exceptions for law enforcement officers who may fly armed by meeting the requirements of Title 49 CFR ? 1544.219. Law enforcement officers should read our policies on traveling with guns.
The key regulatory requirements to transporting firearms, firearm parts or ammunition in checked baggage are:
You must declare all firearms to the airline during the ticket counter check-in process.
The firearm must be unloaded.
The firearm must be in a hard-sided container.
The container must be locked. A locked container is defined as one that completely secures the firearm from access by anyone other than you. Cases that can be pulled open with little effort do not meet this criterion. The pictures provided here illustrate the difference between a properly packaged and an improperly packaged firearm.
We recommend that you provide the key or combination to the security officer if he or she needs to open the container. You should remain present during screening to take the key back after the container is cleared. If you are not present and the security officer must open the container, we or the airline will make a reasonable attempt to contact you. If we can't contact you, the container will not be placed on the plane. Federal regulations prohibit unlocked gun cases (or cases with broken locks) on aircraft.
You must securely pack any ammunition in fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes or other packaging that is specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.
You can't use firearm magazines/clips for packing ammunition unless they completely and securely enclose the ammunition (e.g., by securely covering the exposed portions of the magazine or by securely placing the magazine in a pouch, holder, holster or lanyard).
You may carry the ammunition in the same hard-sided case as the firearm, as long as you pack it as described above.
You can't bring black powder or percussion caps used with black-powder type firearms in either your carry-on or checked baggage.

Yup! 8) Ain't worth the hassle for a $40 jug of powder. It might slip past,,,might not. You won't like it if it doesn't.
Try putting some laundry detergent in a sandwich sized Zip-Lok baggie in your check-in luggage. You won't like that neither...

Benamen, you got the answer I was looking for, big thanks! Traveled with rifle ammo quite a few different places by air, no big deal as long as it's in checked luggage, just figured black powder/substitute would be a big no no, and it looks to be!

If you are not HazMat trained and licensed, you cannot legally ship powder or primers, so you might want to either try to get the outfitter to buy some for you there, or else you could buy some online and have it shipped to him.
