Bought the raw horn at rendezvous and went to horn scraping off the roughest scale on it and then cut and drilled the tip. I used mule deer antler for the spout tip and a resin/wood dowel for the plug. Pine for the cap. Will epoxy it for a tight seal then tack it and finish everything else up with hand tools.20200706_202313.jpg

Done! Made the staples myself out of a coat hanger, flattened them, heated then up and put a twist in them. A little wood glue for some support and they tapped into the horn and wood base plug nicely. The base plug & spout I lightly torched for some age and color. A hand rubbed coat of linseed oil and shes done! Already hanging off my shooting bag. 100% sealed air tight including the staple that goes through the horn.

Have made, purchased, traded buffalo horns for years, buy from breeders or butcher shops is the cheapest places to get them.

That is outstanding! I always wanted to make a nice set of horns, powder & prime from Buffalo horn. Had some at one time but a guy traded me out of them with a custom made knife and sheath. I still have the knife. That is very ingenious using the coat hanger for strap attachments. I have used brass rod but never thought about twisting it. The brass pins and torching the wood really was a good touch for making it more primitive. I like the rough finish. Adds age to it. You did a great job. I bet you will get plenty of comments on that piece of art.

I have bought raw buffalo horns, built powder-horns from buffalo horns, sold, traded or swapped many. Everyone seems to be a little different usually with the tacks used or the design used with the tacks and wood plugs.

Like mentioned, can't remember the numbers that came through the shop. Now Crazy Cross is bringing them in by the bushel baskets from around the world.
