how much does a 300gr xtp drop at 150 or 200. how much at 300? how about with magnum charges? how about 300?

Here is a calculation of what a 44 caliber 300g XTP is supposed to do down range if it has a muzzle velocity of 1960 fps.

According to my chrony this muzzle velocity is what comes from 105g of BH209 in my Accura. I shoot paper at about 4600 feet, and my real life experience at 100 and 200 yd agree closely with the calculation. If you are a believer that 900 foot pounds of energy is required to kill a deer readily, then one can see that 350 yd is about the maximum range, but the drop by then is so great it would be quite difficult to hit the target with one shot.

The longest shot i have made on an animal was about 230 yd. There was no breeze, and i was prone. The herd didn't know i was there, and the doe never was able to get to it's feet. The bullet used on that shot was the 270g Gold Dot.

Any one who shoots bench competition will tell you the wind is the biggest part of the problem. A trajectory is usually predictable a gentle breeze you can just barely feel on your skin will move a Shock Wave 250 gr going 2000 FPS more than 10 inches side ways at 300 yds.
For hunting purposes the best way to deal with range is to sight in so your dead on is as far out as you can get it with out going more than 2.5 inches high with the center of your group at 100yds then shoot until you know where the distance is that it has dropped to 3 inches low, have a laser range finder and not shot any farther than that and be sure to either shoot enough to understand wind allowance or keep your shots on game to the distance you can judge.

Lets see if this will print:

A gentle 10 mph wind moves the bullet over 23 inches. Pretty hard to figure in a hunting situation.

Got this gal at around 230yds... Last I lasered it she was walking away at 225 yds. took me awhile to settle in and connect as she was quartering away.. good 10+ mph cross wind. The bullet exited center shoulder on opposite side... boom-flop.

I was sitting down and used a shooting rest.. ( 2 legged bypod ) Load was 42gr IMR 4759, 275 Parker BE w/ supplied sabot out of my NULA

I have no problem with extended shots on game as long as you practice, practice, practice!!! The shooter bears a huge responsiblility to make a good shot at distance. Discipline to know your limits is a must.

I guess I've missed more than I like to talk about.. but I'm increasing my percentage every year!

With 100 of pyrodex, the muzzle velocity is about 1600 fps with that bullet. That adds a lot to the drop and wind drift. Using a ballistic calculator, if sighted in at 100, it should be 60 inches low at 300 and drift 26 inches in a 10 mph crosswind.

Does your scope have that much adjustment?

Sometimes, I use the bottom of the duplex for extreme ranges.
