Warning do not buy at Gander Mountain

Dropping $700 on just the scope & rings? If you did, you got a "good" scope and should be able to get the manufacturer to do something if Gander won't. I like Cabelas the best. What kind of scope? I had a Bushnell from Bass Pro and shot 20 or so rounds thru my ML and returned it - - the...

    Rifle for woman

I went from a 30-06 "down" to a .243 a couple years ago and wish I did it 30 years ago! Dad started me with a 30-06 and I was too young. A H&R or NEF or Rossi single shot is a good and price effective gun. Sometimes they have "sales" and sell the gun with 3 barrels - 20 ga, .243, and .22...

    459 Yards!

The first thing I noticed was the building behind the woodchuck location. I'm sure it's empty. Pretty neat little dog there.

    sighting in ???

I'm with Steve. Sight in at 50 but make sure you double check at 100 and 150 if that's what your range will be. I've just gone through a rigorous sighting-in episode and will verify that cutting holes at 50 can turn into 6+ inch groups at 100.

    600 pound deer load???

Oh.... I don't have a photo. They do look like a sitka and are about the size of a cow elk. The island used to be a game farm back in the 30's or 40's and these critters have survived. Thanks to the economy I haven't had much work and can't swing either this hunt or my MT mule deer...

CVA Wolf range report & pics

You are my idol! I'm beating my head on rocks and then I look at this post & my jaw drops. It is amazing how the variable change everything. A couple questions if I may... How does the BH powder work? Any issues? Very clean? Were you cleaning the gun every shot? Did you get groups like...

    CVA Wolf Help!

FG, I think all that is on tap for next year - using 777 instead of Pyrodex and maybe another kind of primer. It's been a bummer seeing that most all of the 300 gr bullets don't group. The 250's work okay - maybe I need to try the 200 gr Shockwaves? I'm liking the Hornady XTP's and may...

    CVA Wolf Help!

I wasn't able to get the SST's locally (Bass Pro & Gander) and I couldn't find any Hornady XTP's so I went with Knight XTP's with the green sabot. Thankfully I found some Hornady "Mag Express Sabots (black) with Hornady XTP's in 240 at Gander this morning....bought them on a whim. Started with...

    I choked...

I got busted in my stand by a good buck down here in FL - an opportunity on private land, an easy walk in...deer standing behind me, looking up at me while I wait for him to walk down the trail 15 yards on my left.... Then 15 minutes later I get busted by a doe while trying to draw on her at 10...

    Tonights bowhunt

I've spent 4 days wandering a hunting area and seen 3 rattlers so far - from 6 to 16 or 18 inches. 2 were pigmy's and one was irritated. The dinky one was a timber or eastern diamondback - such a pretty little critter. I have the boots and would prefer chaps...may make the run to Bass Pro...

Lead balls in my .50 inline.

If you do some researchon sabots - I found a sabot for roundballs for .50 cal....I forget where. I was actually thinking about it. :o

    CVA Wolf Help!

I hit the range this morning. Pyrodex RS powder measured in VOLUME 777 209 Primers 100 yards Measured groups to outer edge of bullet holes Shot off a rolled up blanket/towel and butt rested on a folded towel - pretty steady but some wiggle with the Leupold VX-II on 9x at 100 yds. The target...

    CVA Wolf Help!

Thanks! That's the second post saying 85 gr on the Wolf. I was thinking of doing 3 things - lighter bullets (250 gr SSTs/Shockwaves), -777 instead of Pyrodex, -and/or dropping from 90 to 85 gr. I'm hesitant on dropping to 85 gr...would rather go back up to 100 gr...just seems like a light...

    CVA Wolf Help!

A little background - liked the CVA Wolf so I got one. Been trying to get it zeroed in at 100 yds with minimal success. Here's my adventures to date: I have a Leupold VX-II scope and was shooting off a solid rest with the forearm of the gun on a rolled up towel and the but on the bench...not...

how to choose bullet & sabot combinations?

I have a CVA Wolf and just shot it yesterday. It has a Bushnell banner scope (4X with Circle Recticle). The gun handled 120 gr of powder with ease and did not have anything flying out the end. I used Pyrodex powder, a volumetric measure, and Winchester 777 primers. The powder burned off very...

    600 pound deer load???

I got pulled for a specialty hunt where we chase Sambar deer and have to use bow or muzzleloader. I'll be using a .50 CVA Wolf muzzleloader. My buddy & I have been debating the following: Heavy & slow 400 gr+ and mid-weight 250-300 gr & fast. We both have magnum muzzleloaders and scopes...

    .243 Factory Hunting Loads

I'm not questioning the .243 for killing ability. It is a proven caliber and will do the job just fine. The outfitter has a still deer only policy - I guess due to a lot of poor marksmanship issues on the hunters' parts. Sure, you get excited, but to shoot with the scope bouncing all over...
