What do you guys use on the threads. On traditional breech plugs I have always used breech plug tape. Just wondering if that would be a good choice for the speed breech plug.

I use the tape all the way to the end of the breech plug and then coat is with 'Slick 50" grease. The tape and grease make for a tight fit but the breech plug stays really clean even after 30 shots.

What I do is probably not necessary on a TC speed breech - but it give me a lot of confidence - so I continue to tape the plug. I really do not like grease and the clean-up after it's use. Others, and they probably have more patience than i do, swear by grease.... So I think it is something you discover and then what works for you...

In my taping effort - i always wrap tape over the nose to create a seal even a bit before the gas rings.... Pop 1 primer ad the flash channel is cleared....

Thanks guys. Sabot, I hear you on the grease. I hate the clean up. I have used nothing but tape for the past 7 years. Is it ok to cover the gas rings with tape?

I think it is OK... anyway I am doing that way and not had any problems... But, in reality - it does cause the plug to become a bit tighter to install and probably? as the ring compress and INSERT IGNORE - the tape is probably stripped from the gas rings. The tape on the nose should also help the whole process in that it will be blown (pushed) back against the face of the first gas ring and create a great gas seal and even a bit of a temperature block on the rings.

I hate the clean up after anti-seize. Ive switched all mine to Teflon tape too and it seems fine. I would prefer the GREY Teflon for stainless but in my many years building high pressure power washers i never had a problem with plain old white Teflon tape.

If you use grease, you might as well use Permatex anti-seize that is silver in color. It has never failed me, its just a PITA to clean up.

WHY do you need to use tape on a Speedbreech? There is zero blowback. My plug is always 100% clean. I use a tiny bit of thread lube and I have had no problems.

I use the white Teflon tape on my XT breach plugs, I like it fine. I do not run it over the rings as it is cut away any how and just makes it more difficult to install.

You probably do not need anything with a speed breech but it is really important to keep the gas rings clean and loose - so if you can protect them from a bunch of blowback - more power to you... Actually i like anything that reduces cleaning time.

And as Lee says wrapping the gas rings will make it more difficult to get the plug in but, it doesn't seem to bother mine that much....

Mike I suspect its just a difference in which end of the tolerance the XT happens to be. It takes only a very small difference to cut or not cut the tape. Lee

Lee, I am pretty sure that the installation process cuts the tape in my Triumph also. And it definitely takes a little more twist to turn the plug with tape than it does without tape.

I havent fired mine yet but I will start out the way I normally wrap the breech plug and go from there. I will wrap from one end to the other without touching the o-ring or gas rings. Even though I have been told you dont need anything on the plug I feel more comfortable wraping it with tape.
Thanks for the info guys,
Frank
