My Black Diamond is destroying caps! By this I mean I occasionally get punctured caps( by the nib on the striker for the 209's) and the majority of the failures are splits across the face of the cap( musket)Its been an issue from the get-go and is unique, in my experience , to this rifle. Its somewhat less commom with the Flame thrower nipples but it occurs about 5-6 of 10 shots.CCI 6 petal caps have faired best and RWS 4 petal the worst. The bearing area of the nipple ( a T/C) is wide and flat and gives excellent support to the cap.#11 caps are hopeless in this rifle as typically all that is left of the poor thing is a disc over the mouth of the nipple. The skirt has gone God knows where! I'm thinking that a weaker striker spring would help but I'm not sure if any are available. The issue spring is pretty heavy, I believe because of the force necessary to detonate a 209. Any ideas appreciated.

the striker and spring for the 209 and the percussion is different . you will need to get the full conversion kit for it to work correctly .

Cannot say what is causing your caps to split. i suppose it could be caused by a hefty charge of powder. Those Hot Shot nipples with their three holes let a lot of pressure and crud back into the breech area.

Something to try: Get rid of the Hot Shot musket cap nipple and replace it with a plain old musket cap nipple with one hole.

The only change i made on my Black Diamond was to put on a plain old musket cap nipple. The gun works really well with the musket cap nipple and it stays a lot cleaner too.

On the two black diamonds I have owned the striker was designed to be used for all three ignition types. My feeling is that it is the blowback that is causing the caps to break up not the strength of the spring. I guess I didn't let it bother me too much.

It is blow back. On my black diamond xr the same thing was happening, so I went to the 209 primer. The musket caps worked a little better then the #11 caps in mine.

Just to clarify, I am using a regular single port nipple and not the Flame Throwers ( which should be called crud throwers). My powder charges , usually Swiss 3f black, range from 40 to 90 grains under 230-300 grain bullets. Having said that, I dont think the powder charge is the problem. Gonna have to ponder this one...
