Iam buying a new savage 220F slug gun and am having a hard time deciding on a scope. I was thinking of either the nikon slug hunter 3x9 or leupold 2x7 ultimateslam. I appreciate/encourage your opinions and suggestions.

Either of those 2 would be good choices. The 2x7 will fulfill your needs at the yardages you'll encounter with the slug gun. If you need more light,,,go with the Nikon. You won't regret purchasing either scope.

What gauge are you getting in the Savage 220-F? I have the Nikon slug hunter scope on an Encore 20 gauge slug gun and I like it fine. It is my only Nikon but I prefer the Leopold scopes. The Nikon has held its zero just fine.

Nikon places their recticle in the front section of the scope and Leopold places their reticle farther back. Because of this the Nikon has better reticle focus for aging eyes or for those shooters wearing glasses.

If you decide on the Leopold 2X-7X get the VX-II model rather than the slug scope. The adjustment knobs and glass coatings are much better and worth the extra money.

Bancheif999 recomendations are spot on as well.

Unless you have extensive experience slug shooting and plan on spending a lot of money testing ammo, you are much better off spending your money on better optics than you are on the superfluous generic ballistics reticles found in those two scopes.

I would step up to the Leupold VX-III with plex reticle before purchasing either of the two scopes you mentioned. Of course if you have the money, I would go with the Leupold VX-III with B&C reticle.
