Avenger and I were able to make another run to the farm this afternoon to do our final sight in before shooting in the 'Spring Fling' in Orofino on Sunday.

It was a great afternoon for shooting. Nic has been pretty much consumed with this muzzleloader thing - so he is pretty much game to shoot anytime I ask....

One thing... Both Nic and I were going to give 'Pillow Ticking' another try. I had tried last year to make my own from from material bought at Johannes Fabric store and this year I bought some untreated patches off the wall in Tri-State. He was using his new mixture of 'Moose Milk' and I was using another mix made for me by old ML shooter in Troy - that I had met at a Rondy a couple of years ago.

Nic is shooting 80 grains of Pyro select and I am using 60 grains T7-2f. I load a bore button between the powder and the patch because of the heat of T7. Both of us were collecting our patches - his were not very good looking at all - they would have a burned thru slot under the ball and mine just about completely desinegrated - just pieces laying around on the ground. Not to mention the shots were erratic as heck.

I gave up before he did and switched back to my regular .015 all cotton patches. it was not long and Nic was making the switch also. From that point our shooting accuracy increased immensly....

It did not take long to get bored with a paper target so out came the clay pigeons.... placed @ 50,75, and 100 yards. At that point things became competitive, well for this old man anyway.... And in my defense I was not shooting my normal reliable Renegade, i had just gotten a new to me ebay barrel that morning dropped it in my last unused Renegade stock and decided with some encouragement from Nic to shoot it. I was reluctant at first because I was somewhat dissappointed in the condition of the bore. But I yielded and ran a couple of Montana bore conditioner (patches were YUK!) well, we packed it up and headed to the farm. After shooting it - I now declare that i got a really good deal on this old Rene barrel. It shoots great!!!!

Aw man. It's not nice to tease a guy like that. That would be a loonnng drive from Louisiana.

Sounds like you guys had fun. You're getting too good on those clays - gonna' have to start buying the smaller size. Glad you got a good barrel. Buying sight unseen can be a real crapshoot.

Well it was alot of fun. Watching Mike make those shots with a new bore was pretty exciting.

Now, I am new to ML. For the last month, its all I think about, talk about, dream about. A few days ago, Mike wanted me to try some .018 pillow ticking. It was VERY windy and trying to find the patches were near impossible. So was hitting the target any further than 50yds. Blamed it on the wind and not the patches. I went out after that and got some pillow ticking. Treated them with bore butter, used my "moose milk" to wet them a bit, and shot them today. Not good. So I switched over to the cotton .015 patches treated the same way. Pillow ticking is not a good patch for my rifle.

Going back to Mike (Sabotloader), I watched him knock the center out of a clay at 50 on the first shot. Now, I thought that was just a fluke and couldnt do it again. So he proved me wrong by doing it again... at a 100yds! Thinking back (tell me if I am mistaken Mike) I think he did it TWICE at 50.

I am (was) a Marine scout/sniper who served in Iraq and other numerous places around the world. I have made L-O-N-G incredible shots before, using a .50 BMG and 7.62mm NATO, 5.56 NATO ball. So whats my excuse for not knocking out the center of a clay?? .54cal is a bit bigger than a .50 and thus unable to knock out the center of a clay perfectly!! Thats my story and I am sticking to it!!

Those clays are quite a bit smaller than your front sight post at 100yds. Those are REALLY hard to hit, or even to SEE! We tried to pick off a piece of a clay up there, came extremely close a few times, but were unable to actually hit it. Competitive??? Nah!

It was a perfect day for shooting. Good light, slight breeze but mostly still, a good day we havent had around here in way too long. I am looking forward to my first shoot (even though I am fairly nervous) and I am extremely grateful for all the help and tips from Sabotloader. He is one very knowledgeable person! Thanks Mike!

EDIT: And Mike, just FYI, there is no such thing as an "EX"-Marine.... "Once a Marine, Always a Marine!" Try "former" Marine. Maybe in the Navy that is kosher... I dont know. Ex-sniper??? sure!

You should not treat them withbore butter and then wet them with moose milk before shooting. This creates too much lube and will play hell on your accuracy. Its better to use just bore butter. Its not my lube of choice but if thats what you are useing, only use that and try to keep it lubed very thin. You will find out your round ball accuracy will improve greatly over what you are doing. have fun trying differtent loads. you will get it.

Moose Milk on top of Bore Butter worked just fine. Was picking off clays at 100yds with open sights. To treat the patches all we do is melt some bore butter in the microwave, soak up the liquid with the patches, press them VERY good between paper towels and put them in an air tight container. Come shooting time just add a few drops of moose milk to the stack of 30 or so and massage in. Helps them go down, doesnt foul the powder, seems to be really accurate to me.... but then again, when its mostly the shooter behind the gun making those shots.... JUST KIDDING!! I dont really toot my own horn.

It sounds like you have a lot of fun.

If the moosemilk is not slick enough for you, add some more castor oil to the mix.
