I talked to a guy today about smokeless muzzleloading I've been there and done that with the Savage MLII. Not my cup of tea for several reasons. Anyway, I was told that there is a company in PA that will convert a centerfire Remington 700 to smokeless frontstuffer use Pac-Nor tubes. Anyone here have experience or information regarding this conversion. I have a M-700, 300 Saum SS with a first generation TI stock gathering dust inthe safe. I'm thinking this rifle would be a candidate.

I would also like to add on to this post, has anyone used a Rem 700 ML and converted it to shoot smokeless, if so who could do this work?

Remington 700 conversion

There are quite a few guys out there that convert CF 700 to ML's. Cecil at www.PRbullets.com does them for $500 including barrel. You need to talk to your contractor first to determine what they normally work with. Most guys that perform the CF to ML conversions require a .473" caliber bolt for that (.243,30/06) etc. I've done four bolt conversions for a Rem 700ML to get rid of the blowback that occurs in the slamfire type bolt design. We use a .32ACP case for priming and it works great with the black powder substitutes. I once contemplated doing a CF to ML conversion of a 700 Rem but then I came to my senses. There are too many CF cartridges that I have yet to try to waste one as a muzzleloader. I think that the Rem 700 handles like no other rifle produced. I also went down the smokeless road and don't see what all the hype is about. The faster you get the bullets going the more problems creep up with terminal performance of the bullet that you didn't have to deal with before. You can sometimes find NIB Rem 700ML on WWW.gunbroker.com for $250. The SAUM that you have is now being used on the benchrest scene for a 7mm widlcat cartridge. If you were to advertise it on the www.6mmbr.com site I'm sure there will be guys looking for that bolt face action. Anyhow, My intent was not to confuse you. I only want to recommend that you research all your options before making your decision. The Remington 700 ML barrels are of great quality and even if you find a used one that's not, you can still elect to rebarrel. All the machining that would be required to your CF bolt and action will have already been done.Good Shooting!

Mountainam, I am not wanting to convert a CF 700 Rem to using a 32ACP, I would rather use a 209 Savage breach plug system, for hunting here in Ohio, by using a CF type while hunting if you move to another hunting area you would not be able to unload your rifle to transport to the new area, by law the gun would still be loaded.

These guys will build anything you want - http://smokelessmuzzleloading.com/
or better yet go the Doug's Message Board and pose this question.

There are several guys over there that would be more than happy to do
the work for you.Use this link - http://dougsmessageboards.proboards.com ... =smokeless

I do happen to be a supporter of Smokeless Muzzleloading and there are many
advantages to going Smokeless, irregardless of what others think.
You be the judge based upon thoroughly investigating via this board, the
one listed above and talking to SMI above.

Guys that have a beef with Savage, not sure what is going on there.
I own a 10ML II and it's the strongest action, most accuarte Factory muzzleloader
I have ever owned. I was the previous owner of TC Encore and Knight.
Gave them up for the added performance, elimination of most of the cleaning
, lack of smoke obscuring a game hit, cost per shot, etc..,

Yah, there are a lot of arguments on both sides of the fence, pro and con.
My personal experience of over 6 years shooting Smokeless has sold me.

Buckeye, You most certainly can uncap a CF case muzzleloader. They have a breechplug just like a Savage only better because it's shorter. The CF casing chambers into the breechplug and seals a lot better than a 209. I also hunt Ohio and uncap my rifle all the time to move from area to area.

Mountainam, my bad, I thought that the power was loaded into the case after you put it into the barrel, so the ACP case acts as a 209 priner in the breach plug?

Buckeye, You can check out our design on Doug's new message Board under Modern in-lines. I don't know how to attach a link, but it's titled Remington 700ML breechplug conversion. I think it's on the 3rd page.

REM 700 ML

BUCKEYE;
Take MOUNTAINAM"S word on the black powder to smokeless conversion. I also went the savage way and found out that at some point during shootiung you will have to clean that breach plug. That is only a little less cleaning than any black powder gun. To say a smokeless gun is finicky, is putting it mildly.Giving credit where ir is due, the smokeless will deliver with a little more range. I have said it before and I will say it again, a good shooting BP gun will do anything a smokeless gun will do out to 100 yards, and maby to 150. And it will do it with less hassle. The smokeless gun has its place amung shooters, and justifyably so. My point is as is MOUNTAINAM'S, a BP gun that has been modified to correct blowback and hesitating ignition can be had for far less than smokeless gun. I am more satisfied with my Rem. 700 ML converted to the .32 acp primer, than I was with smokeless. All considered, it boils down to what you are going to happy with. GEORGE
