If you are looking at the upper end models ($400+), you might as well take a look at the Knight Long Range Hunter in the classifieds and Green Mountain still has some 54cal brush Guns for only $400 in stainless or blued.

The GMB54 is a 6lb freight train. :D

That GMB54 looks like a really nice weapon. Do you think there would be any concerns with this being my first ML? I read the thread in the Inline Section.

In all honesty....yes i would have concerns about it being your FIRST. Its not quite as simple of a design as others but not bad. If you are familiar with a bolt action then no problem.

Starting out with it might not be the best choice until you know you like muzzleloaders and this one can have a stout recoil. Although if you didnt like it then resale would be extremely good IMO.

It is a bit more short range hunting specific and less range oriented but i needed a light rifle to replace my old ThunderHawk 54. The GMB54-120 is a trophy to me and the pride of my collection because of its rarity and high quality.

IMO there are better options for a first time gun such as the CVA Accurra. It wont break the bank and its hard to find anything bad to say about it. The trigger is fantastic.

There are atleast 2 other members that are far more qualified to give FIRST hand info about the Brush Gun, almost all of my opinions are based on second hand info. Im a newb in comparison on this subject.

BTW i moved my pic and will need to fix it.

Thanks for puttin the pic back up. But, I know where it originated from. Read the review. My only other hunting rifle is this Weatherby SS Sporter 300 win mag.

I don't know, man. I'm really starting to like this GMB54 over the TC Omega SS Laminate. It will be used for elk and deer less than 150 yards for sure.

Both are very well made and capable of taking that game at those ranges.

I would give the GMB54 the edge on ease of carry and using heavy conicals.

The Omega will be more versatile considering choices on sabots and bullets that shoot well. I love thumbhole stocks too.

I turned my Win Apex into a Omega SS Laminated TH stock clone.

She may not shoot like an Omega but she is still dead sexy. :lol

You know it can lead to addiction right? :D

I really like the greens in the GMB54 better than the grey.

It doesn't look like its that much more for components over the .50 cal. I haven't checked comparative availability yet but I will. Do you see any concerns here?

The finish is really nice and i prefer camo type laminate or synthetic too for hunting, The grip area has a type of etching instead of checkering on the GMB54. So does the bottom of the forearm.

Ive refinished a few stocks with many coats of hand rubbed tongue oil and their finish is well within my standards. The included gun case was cheap IMO but oh well.

Green Mountain really needs to post a better gallery for the gun....all there guns really. Their attention to detail is nice. Might as well show it off a bit more. :D

In the end you will get addicted and both will end up in your collection. ;)

Sooner or later :D

And when I went thru the check-out process on Green Mountain there's no need for an FFL? I thought that was so. But when I cantacted a dealer in this state who had an Omega SS laminate on GunsAmerica he would only mail it to an FFL dealer. Oh well. No FFL fees will help pay for half of the overnight s&h.

MMP 50/54 purple sabots and MMP gives a discount for 5 then 10 bags. ;)

I forgot that as an advantage...you really only need to try one sabot since it shoots as good or better than anything else. :D

When Cabelas has MMPs on sale the purple usually is heavily discounted too. :p I paid $4.99 a bag the last sale. :yeah:

Hey I really appreciate all your info on this gun and other sincere input you've made. Thanks!

Went to the library today and checked out The Complete Blackpowder Handbook, 5th Edition. Being such a relatively small town there's not much to chose from. There should be a loaner program from bigger libraries though. Anybody recommend good ML reading for the new guy?

I like some of the guys on this page but one of them needs to be taken with a grain of salt on certain things.

This is enough info to make your eyes bleed. :D

http://www.chuckhawks.com/index2h.muzzleloader.htm

One of them is very pro Savage smokeless ML and very Anti anything not made in USA. You will figure out which one but besides that there is a ton of info.

I will let you sort the facts from opinions. ;)

I know I ran into a couple of individual reviews in doing searches. But one guy really is high on the Knight Disc Elite. He was dumbfounded that they discontinued it. He didn't think they did a good enough job of marketing it. I found some good info in doing some searches on it. It had a good reputation. :D

Should I be concerned about buying a Knight ML being in the situation they are in looking for a buyer? Whether it be the GMB54 or the LRH?

I wouldnt be concerned. I do know there is a motivated buyer/s atm and one of the first guns is supposed to be the Ultimate Slam if the sale goes though.

And NO i will not tell you how i know :p

Well, as good as I'm sure that "Brush Rifle" is I better go w/ this http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =157031856. He's sold a couple already and has another one on auction w/ No Reserve. I already contacted him about this one. So stay away everyone! lol For lack of better terms I need an "All Purpose" ML instead of the "Special Purpose" GMB .54-120. The 28" barrel should afford me better accuracy on longer shots. And reviewing his ballistics test w/ this rifle compared with the others was a consideration FPS/FTE. But more for accuracy.

The links not working but its a NIB TC Omega Stainless/Fluted/Laminated/Thumbhole for $520. :D :D :D

Congratulations, nice choice.

I got my Apex decked out the same way first as my all around gun and 2 stocks. It is more versatile but the 29" barrel is a bit much.

At the time i couldnt afford an Omega so.....

It wasn't easy making that choice. That Brush Rifle really got me going! Thanks for the help. Been reading/searching so much lately. I was getting really apprehensive on making the best choice for me. I can finally relax and start to enjoy.
