What do you Folks think.... a 300 grain Nosler .451 partition or a 300 grain .458 Barnes Original for ELK? Should one bullet be about as good as the other and it is just a matter of which shoots the best? It seems to me that the BO may be a bit better if a 'longer' shot is expected/encountered? Any experience(s) to share?

Both are top of the line bullets designed for that kind of game. I have no personal experience but I would say, which ever bullet gives you the best accuracy would be the one I use. I have heard good things about both of them.

I agree with cayuga. Both are great bullets. Pick the one that shots best.

Why do you prefer the Barnes Original to the Barnes Expander, MZ, TMZ. TEZ?? For Elk, you need as much expansion as you can get. :!: OEH

And another agreement.

Whichever one shoots best in your gun and for YOUR needs. Both are premium bullets. Longer shots the Barnes Original MIGHT have a slight edge.

The Barnes Original 300gr semi Spitzer is my favorite .458 bullet. My first kill on a deer with a ML sabot was with the Original at 160 yards so i am biased. Expansion is massive, upto 225% and extremely good weight retention with that much expansion. They are becoming much harder to find since many people prefer the solid coppers. Both Barnes types are excellent quality. In the copper line up i strongly prefer the 285gr Spitfire if you want penetration and a bit less expansion. Its my Avatar pic btw.

While i dont always agree with this persons website he has done a lot of testing and helped many of us make our own choices.

This is the kind of performance you can expect even at 100yards and sub 2000fps with the BO.

Now with that being said, i have used Partitions in some very warm T/C Contender loads and they performed flawlessly. Zero complaints from me. They held together when other similar weights were almost totally fragmented.

IMO buy both and sell whatever you dont want. I will buy the BOs from you if you dont like them.

Totally agree with Cayuga's assement...

I will also tell you that I am a Nosler fan so I am totally biased also. The partitions work, only I shoot the .458/300 grain for elk. It is a rifle bullet and the copper is a bit thicker.

First ML elk with a Nosler...
