.031 is 1/32"
.031 is a #68 drill bit
.032 is a #67 drill bit

So, I need one of these to keep my flash hole clean? Do I need to enlarge it?

It's the "channel" behind the flash hole, towards the primer, that carbons up. For a standard Omega breech plug that channel can be cleaned out with a 1/8" drill bit. I'll try and find a post I did a few months ago with some pics showing this.

I have since modified my Omega breech plugs to use the Savage ML vent liners and that has made the BP's easier to clean, but that's another subject....

The pics I did showing how I clean a BP aren't up anymore, I guess, so I will put them up here. They are pretty self-explanatory. Just make sure you "drill" deep enough and get your BP cleaned all the way to the flash hole.

These pics are of an Omega BP--I am not sure about other brands and models.

Here are two BP's-- a clean one and one that is carboned up from shooting Win 209's and Blackhorn 209--

Here's my little drill (1/8") which I twist in by hand to clean out the carbon deposits. Make certain you drill all the way to the bottom.

Here's a pic that shows what comes out...

And here's a pic of the cleaned BP--note that you can see the nice shiny silver bottom and flash hole. The drill and Hoppe's #9 and Q-Tips work for me.

paja-now i'm wondering if one of my rare great shooting days was helped
by using win.209 primers instead of my usual fed.209a's.i never have paid to much attention to variation in accuracy due to primers but will from now on.

sabotloader- i allways like your velocity tables, did your groups open up with the large charges........karl

I shot the 250 grn. SST a lot in 2009 and my Omega liked it with 110 grns

this combo is what i also shoot in my omega. i actually use 73 weighed grains which is pretty close to 110 volume measured.

There is a bigger difference than meets the eye because Blackhorn has a pressure difference of 15 percent less, it is a progressive burning powder and that makes it work on a different principle the pressure peak for 777 is shaped like a spear point the pressure peak for Blackhorn is shaped like a plateau this produces more velocity with less pressure.

Huh ? In sabotloader's chart, BH209 has higher velocities in all instances but one when compared to Triple 7. I have some BH209 that I'll try in my new BC but I'm having trouble comprehending how 15% less pressure delivers more FPS - is this a phenomenon of a progressive burning powder?

How many shots are yall gettin off with BH209 before you have to drill the BP out?

On the TC BP's I have not modified about 12. On the ones I have enlarged the flame channel on and add the Lehigh vent liner a lot more. Lee

What is this vent liner, yall are talking about?

http://www.modernmuzzleloader.com/phpBB ... hp?t=13557

The vent liner is like a replaceable flash hole--the concept comes from the Savage smokeless ML, which erodes flash holes pretty quickly because of the intensity and pressure of smokeless powder. I use to replace Vent Liners in my Savage ML every 75 shots or so.

For me, the vent liner conversion on my Omega BP just makes it easier to clean--I can unscrew the vent liner and run a drill bit through the BP to get the carbon out. It is an easy "conversion" I could do myself on the lathe at work. And when the vent liner flash hole erodes after a couple hundred BH209 shots, a new vent liner only costs 3 or $4 from Savage. I won't have to replace the whole BP which would cost about $16.

Sabot loader came up with a change to the way that I was putting in vent-liners he suggested that by drilling through with the #21 drill the same size as you use to drill to thread for the vent liner and by using a Lehigh vent liner that the carbon could be reduced, He was right as usual.
The amount of carbon is reduced enough that unless I do an unusual amount of shooting I don't even look at it any more. I took one out that had not been converted the other day along side of one that had and it [by eye ball] looked like I was getting about 25 % of the carbon after the modification. As a bit of hind sight I think the primer needs just the right amount of space to burn in to burn clean and hot, I also think it improved my extreme range groups since I am hitting the smallest knock down and gong at 250 yd a notice able amount more regular. Lee

So, explain the "Lehigh" vent liner, versus the other. Where do you get the vent liners? Undoubtedly, Savage provides theirs, but what about the others?

Click on products if I remember correctly the savage vent liner is at the end of the first column of bullets.
Explain the Lehigh vent liner.
It is a redesigned to improve it made out of better material with a different heat treat to make it last better vent liner that will fit a Savage or a breach plug with a 10-32 thread and a 40 degree seat.
I have good luck with some of their bullets too. I took a nice buck this year with a 200gr 50/40 had a long angle running shot and got 26 inches of penatration and did massive damage. Lee

Lee 9--Thanks for the note. When I converted my Omega plugs (I have done one for each rifle) I countersunk with a 3/8" drill to match the angle of the vent liner screw and then I did drill all the way through with a #21 and tapped what I needed to for the Savage vent liner. This makes it very much like the Savage BP I have shot a lot in the past, and now I can run a 5/32 drill straight through my Omega BP to clean it, just like I used to do with the Savage. I have not gone with the Lehigh VL only because I have a few Savage VL's already and figured I would use them up.

The VL conversion shoots great and makes cleaning and maintenance easier--thanks to you and Sabotloader for a great idea :applause: :prayer: :prayer: :applause:

I plan to shoot my older Omega tomorrow and test a couple different 300 grn. bullets and sabots with Blackhorn209. I'll try and remember to take some pics of the breech plug and vent liner when I clean the rifle.

I did shoot today and took some pics of my modified/vent liner breech plug. I'll put them up in a new thread since the pics have more to do with breech plugs than Chick's original question about BH209.
