During our bow season I always carry a handgun on me, during gun season I don't and I will again during muzzleloader season. Bigest reason being the critters out there that bite, around here that means dogs that have turned wild and packed up. I seen some during our gun season but they were too far for a shot. As crazy as it may sound coming from southern Ohio, there have been one bear and large cat sightings as well. I found a set of large cat prints when tookt he kids for the youth season. Several locals have confirmed this as well.

Anyone else carry a handgun as well?
I normaly carry a Sig P229 chambered in .357 Sig. Plenty enough power for anything we might encounter.

not allowed to cary a pistol for hunting in canada ,and believe me we have a lot of big mean critters .. piece of advice with ur .357 a big black bear can realy move fast when wounded and if you can't nail him with ur first shot ,you won't stand a chance ..better to just walk away real SLOOOWWWWLLY .

The chance of the black bear being encountered is pretty narrow but the dogs do make me nervous and now we are also starting to get some hogs down south. I would much rather let something pass by than to have a risky encounter with it. Ill save the last bullet for myself...

Im only 40 years old so I still have plenty of time (I hope) but before I leave this earth, my dream is to go on a bear hunt.

Thats how it was here up until this past year. Still cant use your sidearm to hunt with but you can hunt with a handgun that meets the legal requirements.

Same for the republic of Cali. Call me crazy, but I carry a sharp machete in my pack...not much for defense, but hunting where bear are,or hunting hogs it make me feel better knowing I have about a 2 foot sharp piece of steal to stick something thats trying to eat me.Works good for making a blind too...

IL is quite a bit behind the curve when it comes to firearms. The politicans here still think gun owners are the root of all problems. No handguns allowed as a sidearm during the archery season. Wisconsin does not allow you to carry a sidearm during the archery season either, but they are much more gun friendly in general.

I should clarify, we can only carry a handgun as a sidearm while hunting if we are a CHL holder.

Here in Iowa it is even more confusing. You can't carry a firearm during bow season. During early muzzleloader only muzzle loading pistol, or rifle of at least .45 can be carried and used to hunt with. During shotgun season approved calibers of hand guns shotguns and muzzleloadrs are allowed. During late muzzzleloader, approved handguns and muzzleloaders. The end of bow season runs concurrent with the late muzzleloader season so it is possible to carry a handgun during that time if you have both tags and wear the orange.

I walked up on a black bear and her cub couple years ago. All i had was the muzzle loader and i was a bit nervous. She ended up walking away from me but did not leave the area for a good hour. I alawys carry a side arm with me now. I always think about what could happen , a coyote has rabbies, a couger is really hungry today, someones been feeding a certain black bear, who knows i just like to have the odds in my favor. :p

carry gun

I have a 32 snub revolver that I always carry. I do not have permit. I have dispatched deer before w/this little gun. As far as bear go, I do not worry about them. Been around them in the woods many a time (black) and I either go the other way or am very loud about my movements. If momma has a cub)s( I give her plenty of notice and leeway! Now dogs ferals, that is the scary ones. They have no fear of humans and actually equate them w/ food or pain. I have been chased by them in PA right to my car. I returned next day w/ shotgun and armed friends and did a number on the pack. It seems at the end of summer people dump there dogs in the country. Where else they going to go except w/ the pack? Keep your weapon concealed and no one is going to bother yu in the woods about carrying. I will worry about prosecution if any after I get out of any predicament I get in. I 'll take alive and well over torn and beat!
