do I have to use a muzzleloader scope or can I use a regular scope of my choice.

you can use any quality scope that will take the thumping.

Nice choice of gun :yeah: :yeah: :yeah:

excellent choice!!

I use a Bushnelly Sportsman 3-9x32 scope with TC Gorilla mounts. Great setup for me.

The thing you need to keep in mind is eye relief. Other then that, if the scope can take the pounding, it will work.

I just use a fixed 4X. No need for a fancy variable. Dont take shots past 100 yards anyway. I picked up a new Nikon Buckmaster 4X on e-bay for $100.00.

Unfortunately, you get what you pay for when it comes to optics. I would buy a solid name brand high quality scope. The cheaper ones will not be as clear, fog, not be repeatable.

A good place to buy scopes is ebay. You can get used high quality scopes for some pretty good prices. I prefer variables- I use the higher magnification for load development and hunt on the lowest power setting.

I actually have two choices... I use 3x9x40's and I also want the ballistic reticule.... not use it with a certain load at a certain distance, but as a reference for the load and bullet that I choose to shoot.

so the two scopes

Leupold 3x9x40 Ultimate Slam
Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x40 DOA Reticule with rain guard lenses and and fast focus eyepiece...

Regular quality Rifle scope will work fine on a muzzleloader.

If you want to save some money I am shoot a 3x9x40 Cabelas Powder Horn scope that I really do like...

I have yet to hear someone say that they didn't like the MLer powder horn from cabelas.

Just as important as the scope, IMHO, are the mounts you choose. Having a scope that is easily removable yet returns to zero repeatedly is worth lots when it comes cleaning time. That's why I generally recommend Warne QD rings. Leupold QRs are a close second in my book, the problem with them being the major expense for that setup is the base and that base will generally fit only one rifle. The Warne QDs will fit any Weaver-style base.

An online place that I've ordered from before had the Swarovski AV series scopes at a great discount which are supposedly the same as the new Z3 models. I ordered the AV3-9x36 and can't wait to put it on a new Triumph. I messed up last Sunday and looked thru one at Cabelas - I was ruined after that . . . .

Your exactly right, A great scope is pure junk with bad rings and mounts, and if you have a lapping bar, all the better.

Underclocked - with the QDrings, do you recommend the steel bases or can the aluminum base stand up? Thanks.

.

Aluminum bases are much tougher than most give them credit for... saw one in half sometime just for kicks. I have no lack of confidence in the aluminum bases. The Z2 alloy base that CVA sells came on my Apex and it is working perfectly with the Warne QDs.

Another base that fits the Accura nicely is the one that EABCO sells - http://www.eabco.com/cgi-bin/shopper.ex ... ey=127-814 - more expensive than the Z2 bases and certainly more than plain old Weaver two piece, but that base offers maximum flexibility in ring positioning.

shooter44n45, didn't see your reference to that base before posting. It will fit. :)

Not a problem, thanks for confirming it, not that I didnt trust the fellow at CVA...

Aluminum is plenty strong for a scope base, there isnt much force really put on them anyways. They offer alot in weight savings.

UC - do you think the Dura site rings would work with that eabco base?
I need a little more rearward then the DS base allows.

Thanks
Steve

Yes, they'll work fine on that base. I'm not terribly crazy about those rings though, especially the ones that are supposed to be QD.
