called my brother in law and was asking about the deal on the rifle hes going to use on this saturdays elk hunt. We're going to check out some centerfires at the local store but afterwards i dropped the bomb and asked: So what do you think about using a .50cal Hawken with patched round ball and 100 yards max?

He started the chuckle and said, You're nuts bro! Theres huge open fields. Then he started thinking and was like, well if we can catch a cow in the ditch area or in the brush i think its possible. Bring it! We'll sight it in and carry it with us.

 now the question, do i use a .490 ball cast from powerbelt lead, lead pipe or wheel weight?

lead pipe... your probably not going to get a pass through with a .50 caliber roundball on an elk so you want that ball to penetrate and expand in the organs.

a BIG surprised came in today. I didnt expect this at all! Marty, one of my forum members sent me 5lbs of lead pipe and of course i casted a little over 200 balls with it. Today i see the post man get a big box and grunted and im like, wth is that? Then i saw the name on it and it dawned on me!

If my calculations are correct, this is over 40lbs of soft lead.

That ought to be fun cutting up with the hand saw

Use these tools..

FG: get ahold of a saber saw, with a metel cutting blade.. that 'l do it.. also if you have an axe, and a block of wood, cut it up with that.. also if you have a propane torch, just melt it into your lead pot HTH Les

I agree with Cayuga....lead pipe...
go soft and expand
better wound channel

well im up in new mexico with the hawken and powerbelt lead round balls. We're going out to the NRA tomorrow morning.

What a time to go elk hunting. Its -3* outside  glad i brought all of my heavy clothing this trip.

what a beautiful day to go shooting!! A little breezy. a very warm 8* in the sun. Today Raton new mexico hit a record of -5 * last night. Which means tomorrow morning it will still be around 1 or minus 1*

The way i look at it, its my brother in laws hunt so he can go walk around while i wait in the running truck with hot coffee

i also picked up some .015 TC patches ( lord hope they are not crap like the last!) and also a tube of natural lube 1000 (bore butter) did a 100 patches and will try them out here at the NRA for accuracy @ 100 yards. Also am taking some .018 pillow ticking.

will report on how the shooting goes.

i got to tell ya. its a pure son of a gun reloading in 13* weather. Things started to warm up when a little hottie game and fish lady showed up  wow! she could arrest me just for practice.

Anyway, we got the hawken dialed in with the .015 patches. i didnt want to fiddle with the harder loading .018 pillow tick. But the .015 tc patches lubed with bore butter worked out excellent with 90gr RS. Shes now dead on @ 100 yards and so if we see something within that range tomorrow and we can put a stalk on, he'll use the hawken.

my bro in law with his new .270. bought it on thursday, sighted in on friday and went hunting on saturday with it

shes a big cow.

How far were those elk in the video away from the shooters when they were firing?

in the beginning they were only about 200 yards. my bro in law let chris take a couple shots before he went and fired his shot and dropped his on the spot. Chris forget that his rifle was dead on @ 300 and he kept holding high.

heading out again here in a bit.
